Sorrowful Mysteries

1st Mystery: Jesus Prays in the Garden of Gethsemane

“Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me! Yet not my will, but yours be done.” Then an angel from heaven appeared to him to comfort him (Lk 22:42–43).

Jesus is aware of his human weakness, but he entrusts himself to the Father because he knows that the Father will not leave him alone.

Let us unite ourselves with Jesus in his surrender to the Father and ask the Blessed Virgin, our dear Mother, to deign to remain always with us, helping us where we cannot reach with our own strength, and let us be certain that our good Mother will give us immense help. Faith! And let us live with confidence.

2nd Mystery: Jesus Is Scourged

And Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released Barabbas to them; and after having Jesus scourged, he handed him over to be crucified. (Mk 15:15)

When love for God and for others sustains our journey, suffering is transformed into grace that unites us to the mystery of Jesus.

The Wounds of the Crucified One draw our affection to them like sweet chains of love. Let us pray fervently to our dear Mother, the Most Holy Virgin Mary, that she may deign to accept our ardent desire to love Jesus and to see him loved. Let us place our complete trust in God, the Blessed One, and frequently make acts of trust in him, even when we are struck by the rod of tribulation.

3rd Mystery: Jesus is crowned with thorns and mocked

And, having woven a crown of thorns, they placed it on Jesus’ head, with a reed in his right hand; then, as they knelt before him, they mocked him: “Hail, King of the Jews!” (Mt 27:29).

True humility is measured by the greatness of God, who made himself small for us.

Let us have faith in prayer. Let us pray fervently with a spirit of humility, and let us not be afraid. I recommend meditation on the Passion of Jesus Christ and silence. With humility, patience, and true love for God, we can do everything He asks of us. Take courage and place great trust in Jesus and Mary.

4th Mystery: Jesus ascends to Calvary carrying the cross

Then they took Jesus, and he, carrying the cross, set out for the Place of the Skull, called Golgotha in Hebrew (Jn 19:17).

If the Cross is the Master’s way, it is also the way of the disciples. Let us allow ourselves to be guided by Mary.

I stood there speechless, my eyes filled with tears and fixed on the dear image of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Every now and then, trembling all over, I turned to the Mother and said: Mary, help me; make me burn with love for Jesus and for You. Show me what I must do to please Your Son. Pointing to Calvary and the Cross, she invited me to climb up. May the Virgin lead us along the path of peace… Let us trust in the help of this Most Holy Mother.

5th Mystery: Jesus Dies on the Cross

Jesus cried out in a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.” Having said this, he breathed his last (Lk 23:46).

Death is not the final word. Take courage. Our God has conquered death forever through his death and resurrection.

I have great suffering in my heart, but I feel great trust in Jesus Christ and in the Blessed Virgin Mary: I abandon myself totally into their arms. Great trust in God, and no fear. Let us also trust in the Blessed Virgin Mary, our dear Mother, and we will see miracles.
