Subject:  Circular Letter September/October

“With the same faith as Mary, let us become “weavers of hope” in our world, sharing who we are and what we have, so that the presence of Jesus may grow among us

and his Kingdom take shape.” Magnifica Humanitas 245

Dear Sisters,

This circular letter has been coming to birth over the last few months as we all continue to witness a world so in need of persons “weaving hope.”  Every day the news reminds us of the magnificence of humanity and the weakness of humanity.  How do we stand in the midst of such a suffering world bringing healing, hope, compassion, reconciliation?

During our term, we have chosen to write this letter between the Feast of Mary, Woman of the New Covenant and the remembrance of our Martyrs of Charity and Faith, Venerable Serafina Cinque and St Gaspar.   As we have quoted before from our General Assembly Direction statement, “With Mary standing beneath the Cross, we draw strength for a journey of conversion, that brings healing and reconciliation.”

The quote above comes from the closing paragraph of Pope Leo’s encyclical Magnifica Humanitas.  He encourages us to the same faith as Mary, to become “weavers of hope” so that the presence of Jesus may grow among us and his Kingdom may take shape.  It seems that the Spirit continues to remind us of who we say we are and what we have to give to the world.

Considering Mary standing beneath the Cross, our Martyrs of Charity and Faith, Serafina and St Gaspar, how did they find the capacity to stand beneath the Cross of suffering, misunderstanding, war, poverty, disrespect for human dignity and continue to weave hope?  How do we find the same capacity?

Perhaps we begin by noticing all the places and ways we encounter Christ in humanity, in its magnificence and fragility.    Often we find this in times of great trial, of grief, of letting go, and in the chaos of it all.  We see people with unimaginable faith and strength, who endure and stand up with compassion and courage.  Just as Mary, our Martyrs, Serafina, St Maria De Mattias and St Gaspar.  They show us that it is In the very act of each day living faithfully the dying and rising.

We all have seen how magnificent and fragile life can be.  We know it in our own bodies and spirit.  Here Is where we might find our path to building the capacity to stand beneath the Cross, the sign of victory over death to new life.  We each can intentionally choose this Paschal Journey, taking what is before us and transforming it into “a living image of Divine Charity” as St Maria encouraged.

In the weeks and months ahead, may we each seek to grow in our capacity to be Adorers of the Blood of Christ, weaving hope in our own lives and transforming it into grace, healing, reconciliation and life wherever we are.  Everyone of us have these seeds of hope that have been planted through our own faith journey. Together we go forward letting go and letting God’s grace come, so that “we can catch a glimpse of God’s newness that fills us with hope and confidence for our future as a Congregation.  (GA 2023 Statement)

Let us choose to be “weavers of hope” sharing who we are and what we have, so that the presence of Jesus may grow among us and his Kingdom take shape. Together we have the capacity for this, if we choose to stand together with Christ the source of our hope.

In hope and prayer,
